Periodontologia Perdident

What does periodontology involve?

Periodontology is a field of dentistry focusing on the health of the gums and the structures that support and hold the teeth in the mouth. A periodontist specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and comprehensive treatment of gum and periodontal diseases, as well as mucosal disorders such as gum recession and improper frenulum attachments. Regular visits to a periodontist are crucial to maintaining healthy gums and preventing serious oral health issues. Periodontology plays a key role in maintaining overall oral health, which impacts the health of the entire body.

  • Diagnosis and treatment of gum and periodontal inflammations.
  • Periodontal surgery for regenerating periodontal tissues.
  • Surgical treatment of mucogingival disorders, such as gum recession and improper frenulum attachments.
  • Gummy smile correction.
  • Planning and performing implant surgeries for patients with periodontal diseases.
  • Patient education on oral hygiene and periodontal disease prevention.

What are the symptoms of periodontal diseases?

  • Bleeding gums: Often occurring during brushing, and eventually spontaneously, this is the first symptom of gum issues.
  • Changes in the shape and color of gums: Gums may become bright red and swollen due to inflammation.
  • Gum pain: Occurring during eating, and eventually becoming spontaneous.
  • Bad breath (halitosis): Caused by the buildup of plaque and food particles on tooth surfaces and in periodontal pockets.
  • Periodontal pockets: These form as periodontal disease progresses and causes gradual tissue loss, including bone and gum tissue that supports the teeth.
  • Tooth mobility and eventual tooth loss: Caused by the gradual loss of bone around the teeth.
  • Tooth sensitivity: Occurs due to the exposure of the tooth roots, often as a result of gum recession.

Frequently Asked Questions

The first symptom of gum and periodontal disease is bleeding during brushing and flossing. As the disease progresses, the gums change their shape and color. They become swollen, red, and start to hurt. Untreated gingivitis can lead to the development of periodontitis, also known as periodontal disease. This results in the gradual loss of tissues that hold the tooth in the socket (bone and gums, the foundation in which teeth are anchored). Teeth become loose, shift, and, as the disease progresses, may fall out. Periodontal pockets form, tooth roots become exposed, and tooth sensitivity appears. An additional common symptom of periodontitis is bad breath (halitosis).

The most important factor in preventing gum disease is maintaining proper and thorough oral hygiene. Teeth should be brushed at least twice a day, and interdental spaces should be cleaned daily with dental floss. It is also crucial to clean the dorsal surface of the tongue using a toothbrush or a specialized tongue scraper.

You should visit a periodontist whenever you notice symptoms of gum and periodontal disease, such as bleeding, red, swollen, and painful gums. If your teeth shift position or become loose, or if you experience bad breath, it’s time to consult a periodontist. A periodontist can also help if you notice gum abnormalities, such as exposed tooth roots (gum recession), improper frenulum attachments on the lips or tongue, or a “gummy smile.”

If periodontal disease is not very advanced, it can be treated with non-surgical methods. We perform professional deep cleaning of the tooth surfaces to remove dental plaque. Additionally, we use laser therapy and apply medications to periodontal pockets. In more advanced cases of periodontal disease, surgical procedures may be required to regenerate lost periodontal tissues.

Gingivitis, where the inflammation affects only the soft tissues around the tooth, is a reversible process. With proper treatment and careful oral hygiene maintained by the patient, the symptoms of the disease gradually heal. Untreated gingivitis often leads to the development of periodontitis, in which the disease also affects the bone tissue. Periodontitis is an irreversible process, but with proper treatment, the progression of the disease can be slowed.

At PeriDent Dental and Periodontology Center, all dental procedures are performed under local anesthesia. We take great care to ensure the comfort and positive experience of our patients during dental treatment.
